new assignment: Book Project (graphics/design)

Well, here goes the latest instalment in the adventures of a multi-media student.
Finished the group film project a couple of weeks ago feeling relatively pleased but absolutely shattered by the long haul of it. So I was quite relieved to begin the new module of graphics and design. The brief is to create a book based on a decade in the 20th Century. "The same idea as the last project !?" was my remark, to which quite rightly came the reply that the brief from the last project wasnt really followed by most groups, by permission off Ben of course. We however did, so my instant reaction was a groan. On second thoughts I soon realised the 20th Century was in fact a very long period of time to choose from (about one hundred years I think) and there were several decades I was interested in basing my project on.
In the early Eighties, I was a B-Boy (Breaker/breakdancer for the uninformed) . Me and my crew would love nothing better than taking our Lino mats and ghetto blaster down to Bury or Manchester centre and make utter twats out of ourselves spinning, gliding, locking and popping with just about every body part we could think of or copy from the huge movement originating from New York in the early 80's. Another sub culture of this hip-hop movement originated in the early 70's and it was this that I decided to base my project on - graffiti art, its history and development in styles. How to translate what I thought was essentially a large scale medium, message related, in your face art for the masses, into a hand held book or booklet was my next quandary.

PROGRESS

I thought I should update my blog as its some time since I have had chance. I think over the past month or two I have been busier than I have ever been. The year assignment project is nearing completion and I've been rushing around like a headless chicken trying to get things to a point of perfection. The thing is, I have realised a video production involving so much narrative and "storying" (if thats a word) such as ours will never live up to my expectations mainly due to a couple of obvious reasons; 1. My aspirations and expectations are far higher than my capabilities (YET) in this field 2. I have realised my usual career format of delegating certain roles to certain people cant possibly work in an educational group task, largely due to the fact that we are all untrained and therefore still learning. So everybody has to get more involved with all roles whereas in the professional world delegates are expected to be already trained and can be left to produce on their own.
In some ways I feel I have spread myself a bit too thin, trying to do too many important areas of the project in the hope of achieving the unachievable. However and this is my conclusion, what I have achieved is a fairly comfortable platform from which I can continue further study. In other words all the time spent labouring over new software such as Premier Pro, and sleepless nights with ideas running through my head have given me new skills with which I can progress on to the next stage of this frustrating, yet incredibly interesting course.
